Donya Lynn O’Brien is the artist behind, METAL MONK. The Collection pieces she creates are upscale, sterling silver and semi precious – definitely bold colorful statement pieces! They feature beautifully detailed carved sterling castings, carved Japanese vintage glass cabochons, and unusual stone combinations. Some pieces follow a theme like her gorgeous Seascapes group with all sorts of ocean creatures adorned with stones and pearls, or they simply highlight a grouping of vintage cabochons like her show stopping turquoise linear collar. She also creates a “cheap & chic” line playfully names “Pink Monkey”. Taking her vintage finds, Lucite, and reclaimed materials, her best selling “Frida” floral garland necklaces are like a party you can wear! Known for making things out of unique materials, she likes to joke that there was never a yard sale she could pass up.
Afer graduating for the Rhode Island School of design in 1994, she dreamt of having her own collection while designing in NYC. Being a practical single mom, she knew she wanted to have the flexibility of owning her own business, so she could be home for her son, Hudson. She made that a reality in 1998, building the business from the ground up, Donya took the collection door to door. Shortly thereafter, her handcrafted work could be found in galleries & boutiques across the country, and as far away as Japan, and has been featured in major publications such as “In Style” “Lucky” and “Oprah”.
Today Donya enjoys living out on the beautiful North Fork of Long Island in wine country, with her 8yr old son Hudson, and Buster….a very friendly pound puppy. Her store in Greenport has become a local destination, where her fans love to come see her latest creations which she is usually making right in front of them. We love that Donya doesn’t take herself too seriously, and she certainly juggles a lot of hats…single mom, jewelry artist, store owner, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.
